Larry Breslin Double Top Concert Classical Guitar

Brazilian Rosewood and Western Red Cedar

 Overview & Condition

This classical guitar was handmade by Larry Breslin in 2004; his concert classical guitars are a wonderful synthesis of traditional and modern luthery. The soundboard uses two sets of quatersawn Western Red Cedar, unusually stiff with excellent lateral rigidity. The cedar sets surround a middle layer of Nomex material using a vacuum clamping process pioneered by German luthier Matthias Dammann. Extremely rare old-growth Brazilian rosewood was used for the back and sides, pre-convention tone wood that was air dried for several decades. Side construction features inner Spanish Cypress ribs similar to traditional Ramirez design. The neck is made of equally old Cuban Cedar. Ebony was used for the fingerboard, headplate and all bindings. The Hauser-inspired tuning machines are made by Nicolo Allesi in Italy, quality tuners that operate smoothly and accurately.

One owner. The guitar has been carefully maintained and is in excellent playing condition with no cracks. The instrument is in original condition with no changes of any kind. The fingerboard and frets are in excellent shape. The cedar top has a few light nail marks near the sound hole and a few extremely tiny string marks behind the bridge. The back has a couple of small finish marks as well. These are all restricted to the finish only and difficult to notice without very close inspection.

Performance & Measures

The double top soundboard responds quickly and projects powerfully with strong volume and sustain. The instrument produces a characteristic rich cedar timbre with complex overtones, strong trebles and amazing harmonics. The neck shape is a very comfortable flattened oval design, thin and consistently so nearly to the 12th position. Playing action is fast for comfortable, extended performance at 2.5mm for high-E and 3mm for low-E on the 12th position. Scale is 650mm. Nut width is 52mm.
